Why is laughter important in friendships?

Excuse the extreme close up of my mouth, but it’s evidence. I just got back from a weekend with my friends from back home. We’ve done our best to get together every year since we graduated from college in 1998.

I can’t say for sure why we’ve remained close over all these years but one thing is for sure – we laugh. A LOT. My body physically hurts from laughing so hard.

I did a quick search of the Google on the science of laughter. I found some research and found this quote, which definitely makes it make sense.

“Shared laughter is a really important, but overlooked behavior…Shared laughter signals that they see the world in the same way... Perceived similarity ends up being an important part of the story of relationships.” – Sara Algoe

It’s definitely an important part of our three decades of friendship.

Grateful for all the giggles.
