Binge watching Nashville the last few months has me thinking about songwriting.

I’ve never written a song in my life but this show has got my imagination working overdrive.

On a whim, I bought a book about songwriting when I took the teenager to a music store. And now I’m writing silly songs just to see if I can.

Even though I am a rock and roll kind of girl, I’m reading these words that I’m typing right now with a southern accent, y’all.

It’s funny how easily influenced we humans are by what we see on our screens. In my head I’m talking with inflections just like Rayna James, and I am not the least bit southern. Country music hasn’t played on my car radio since Garth Brooks sang Friends in Low Places.

Alas, I’m feeling like playing with words and notes in this manner is just the creative outlet I’m needing right about now, given how much squealing is happening out there in this upside down world.

I’m also feeling like reminding myself and others of how easy it is immerse yourself in a narrative so deeply that your whole world starts to revolve around it.

And this is something we all ought to be thinking about. 🤠

p.s., In addition to paying attention to how we’ve been engaging with the narratives we’ve been watching, it’s also a great time to remind ourselves of these wise words by Kurt Vonnegut. 👇

Kurt Vonnegut quote

p.p.s., The narrator in my brain is still talking in that corny southern accent … good lawd.
